5 Ways to Protect Your Skin this Summer

5 Ways to Protect Your Skin this Summer

Whether hiking in the forest, swimming at a lake or camping in a park, exploring the outdoors is the best part of summer – but increased sun exposure and lax skincare regimens can wreak havoc on your skin (sunburns and clogged pores, we’re looking at you). Here are five ways to take care of your skin this season, to ensure your complexion is clear, glowing and healthy come fall.

Use sunscreen (non-negotiable!)

… and not just in summer! You should be applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher all year long. The sun’s rays send us crucial vitamin D, but too much exposure can lead to all sorts of problems – including increased risk of developing skin cancer. Heavy blasts of sun over time can also lead to wrinkles, sagging and age spots (did you know UV exposure contributes to 80 percent of skin aging?). So, stock up on several bottles of sunscreen and never leave home without it!

Exfoliate sparingly

Although your skin might feel congested under all those layers of sweat, sunscreen and makeup, don’t make the mistake of overexfoliating – it can lead to breakouts, redness and irritation. Instead, wash your face with a gentle cleanser once or twice per day (morning is optional, but never skip your nightly cleanse), and apply an all-natural exfoliator once per week. A good option is Bl’eau’s Canadian Glacial Oceanic Clay Mask, which is sourced from ancient glaciers in the Pacific Northwest. Already a detoxifying powerhouse with more than 60 minerals, micronutrients and rare elements, the sustainably harvested clay is combined with healing ingredients like organic aloe vera leaf juice, which strengthens the skin barrier and soothes inflamed skin (perfect for sunburns or sensitive complexions!); and magnolia bark extract, which protects against inflammation and reduces redness.

Use an ultralight moisturizer

When applied in summer, heavy moisturizers can lead to clogged pores, inflammation and acne – the combination of thick cream sitting atop sweat and sunscreen is a recipe for complexion disaster. Instead, use a lightweight product, like Bl’eau’s Hydrating Glacial Moisturizing Emulsion, which is crafted with Canadian Glacial Oceanic Mineral Water – the pristine liquid found within oceanic clay. Rich in skin-nourishing sea minerals, the mineral water has a cooling effect that calms and soothes, while its detoxifying properties brighten, tone and promote healthy skin cell renewal.

Invest in vitamin C

Consider vitamin C your armour against the ravages of the summer sun! The powerful antioxidant protects cells from damaging radicals caused by UV exposure, and also lightens hyperpigmentation, evens skin tone and enhances radiance. We recommend applying a vitamin C serum in the evening, as higher concentrations during the day can make sensitive skin more prone to irritation or sunburn. Plus, while you’re sleeping your body is repairing itself – and vitamin C is the perfect ingredient to help your skin cells speedily repair damaged DNA. Give your skin an added boost by applying a mask rich in vitamin C. Bl’eau’s Illuminating Seaweed Clay Mask contains a healthy dose of acai extract, whose powerful punch of vitamin C brightens and lightens hyperpigmentation, and instils an enviable lit-from-within glow.

Treat sun-damaged skin

Despite the preventative measures you take to protect your skin in the summer, a few extra hours at the beach or a forgotten sunscreen on a long hike can lead to sunburn or topical damage. Fear not! You can treat pesky irritations by continuing to apply sunscreen and staying in the shade, giving your skin time to repair. Keep a bottle of Bl’eau’s Glacial Mineral Toner close, and spritz sunburned skin throughout the day – the product’s hydrating Glacial Oceanic Mineral Water is particularly effective at cooling, soothing and reducing redness. If the sun has left your skin ultra-dry, apply moisturizer regularly. You can also introduce a moisturizing mask into your weekly routine. One suggestion is Bl’eau’s Nourishing Spirulina Clay Mask, which is crafted with rehydrating Canadian Glacial Oceanic Clay, as well as spirulina extract, which is packed with skin-friendly minerals and anti-inflammatory vitamins A, C and E to help damaged skin eliminate toxins and heal faster.

Summer skincare doesn’t have to be a minefield – in fact, the best thing you can do is simplify your skincare routine and concentrate on having your best season ever. Happy adventuring!
